Felted Birch Trees: An Expressive Landscape

  • The Art Lounge 300 East Dimond Boulevard Anchorage, Alaska, 99515 United States (map)

WHO: Adults-14 and up
WHEN: Saturday, December 5th, 10 AM–2 PM (One-day class)
WHERE: The Art Lounge, 300 E Dimond Blvd, Anchorage
COST: $150.00

There's something magical about a birch forest: the bright white trunks, the dark, expressive bark, the way the trees seem to glow against snow and sky. In this one-day workshop, you'll capture that magic in wool. Join fiber artist Margaret Mackie at The Art Lounge to "paint" with fine Merino wool, layering soft, saturated color like brushstrokes to build a dreamy background of sky and forest depth. Then the birches step forward as you shape and lay out tall white trunks and bring them to life with bold bark markings, knots, and branches. Together we'll take your piece through the full wet felting process, then finish with needle felting to add those final expressive details. You'll go from loose fiber to a completed, textured landscape, all in a single day.

This project is wonderfully free-flowing and forgiving, which is what makes it possible to create a finished piece in one session. There's no need for perfection, just bold marks, soft blending, and your own interpretation of the forest. More than a technique class, this is a gift you give yourself: four hours to slow down, get lost in the flow of creating, and make art alongside other kind, curious makers in a warm, non-judgmental community. You'll leave with new skills, a one-of-a-kind felted artwork, and the quiet joy that comes from making space for yourself.

No prior experience is needed, and all materials are provided. Open to ages 14 and up, and since we'll be together through the lunch hour, you're welcome to bring a lunch, snacks, or drinks to enjoy.
